Where countless leaders and dignitaries have been entertained, the White House is both the home of the President of the United States, Biden and his family, as well as a living museum of American history.
This week, Social Studies teacher, Mr. Krebs and the 6th grade class were able to go to DC as part of a special program at the White House Visitor Center, that helps students to strengthen skills in critical thinking, analyzing, observing, researching, and writing while learning about presidents, the White House, and President's Park.
Students used maps and photographs to understand and interpret the spatial and functional relationship between the primary government buildings in Washington, DC, the historical significance of the statues and memorials in President's Park, and the significance of the White House as an international symbol of freedom and democracy.
Following this activity, students were given a walking tour of President's Park where they were able to find learn about the national treasures within the park, and the importance of protecting these national treasures for future generations.
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
