Teacher Highlight: Mr. Chris Krebs | Middle School Social Studies Teacher at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences

Kay'La Portee
Chris Krebs, the dedicated middle school social studies teacher at Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences, brings over three decades of teaching experience to his classroom. Having joined Barnesville in January of 2020, Mr. Krebs has been a vital part of the school community ever since. He started as a long-term substitute, transitioning from social studies to digital literacy and language focus, and even served as a roving substitute. By the following year, he became the full-time social studies teacher, a role he has thrived in ever since.

With thirty-two years of experience, including more than twenty-five years in the Baltimore City School System, Mr. Krebs brings a wealth of expertise and passion for education. For him, the most rewarding aspect of teaching at Barnesville is the enthusiasm and motivation of his students. “I have a room full of motivated and enthusiastic students who want to do well and are open to learning new things,” he shared. “Their attention and commitment to their education is evident every day.”

Mr. Krebs’ classroom itself is a reflection of his fun and inviting teaching style. It’s cozy, filled with world maps, and even features a cool fish tank, creating a relaxed and engaging environment that’s perfect for learning. “I want my classroom to feel like a space where students can not only learn but feel comfortable and excited about the material,” said Mr. Krebs.

While Mr. Krebs is primarily known for his social studies classes; he has also been involved in other aspects of school life. He once coached the girls’ soccer team, helped backstage with the school production of Beauty and the Beast, and has mentored through Barnesville's Bird and Critter Clubs. His dedication to fostering a well-rounded educational experience is apparent in every area of his work.

When asked why he chose Barnesville, Mr. Krebs highlighted the personalized learning environment and the supportive community. “The student-to-teacher ratio allows for a lot of individualized attention, and the entire school community is committed to bringing out the best ‘high-school-ready' students,” he explained. “The administration is also one of the most supportive I’ve encountered.”

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Krebs leads an active and varied life. A lifelong fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens, University of Maryland, and Washington Capitals, he holds season tickets to both the Orioles and the Ravens. His athletic pursuits are equally diverse–he enjoys golf, foosball, darts and pool and has coached and played soccer for decades. A unique chapter of his life includes living in Japan as an Exchange Teacher through Baltimore and Kawasaki, where he even had the opportunity to climb Mount Fuji in 2003.

Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Krebs worked as a sportswriter for the Catonsville and Arbutus Times and has also had acting roles on television as a child, participated in high school plays, and engaged in theatre at Frostburg State University.

Through his dedication to his students, his school, and his diverse personal interests, Chris Krebs exemplifies what it means to be a passionate and engaged educator. We are fortunate to have him as part of the Barnesville community.
