Teacher Highlight: Ms. Kaitlin Sheppard | Middle School Math Teacher at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences

Kay'La Portee
For the past three years, Ms. Kaitlin Sheppard has been making math meaningful and fun for students at Barnesville. She has made the most of teaching–transforming math class into a space where students feel confident, supported, and excited to learn.

Before stepping into the classroom, Ms. Sheppard worked as a director at a before-and after-school childcare program, where she first discovered her love for working with students. That experience shaped her belief in the importance of connection and care, which she now brings into her teaching every day.

When asked about the most rewarding part of teaching at Barnesville, Ms. Sheppard does not hesitate: “The students, truly. They bring so much joy. Watching them grow year to year and seeing what they bring to the classroom is something really special.”

Beyond the classroom, Ms. Sheppard is a dynamic presence on campus. Last year, she coached the volleyball team and plays an active role in the Student Council, where she helps guide students in both leadership and communication. Through Student Council, students lead morning announcements during daily meetings, discussing school events, important reminders, and topics of the day. This not only builds school spirit but also helps students develop grammar, confidence, and public speaking skills–an essential part of their growth as learners and leaders.

She says what drew her to Barnesville–and what keeps her here–is the deep sense of belonging, “This is a place that accepts everyone for who they are. We encourage students to explore what they love and be themselves, which is so important.”

Outside of the classroom, Ms. Sheppard is a proud pet parent to her dog, Koda, and cat, Myla. She is a lifelong dancer; she was captain of her high school dance team and continued dancing through college. She is also a fan of logic puzzles and escape rooms–always up for a challenge.

Ms. Sheppard brings a heart, humor, and a strong sense of community to everything she does. Whether she’s solving equations or encouraging creativity, she’s making a lasting impact–one student at a time. We are proud to have Ms. Sheppard as a part of our community.
