Fourth-grade students completed a hands-on science experiment to explore the digestive system from food to finish!
Students started with a banana, graham crackers, and a bowl aka "the mouth." They worked to "chew" the food by breaking it apart with their hands & utensils, and then adding saliva (cup of clear liquid).
Next up, the food made its way down the esophagus and into the stomach, symbolized by the ziploc bag. Students added stomach acid (the colored liquids) and squished all the food and liquids together. By this step, there was a chorus of, "Ew" and "Cool," that could be heard around the lab!
Now, onto the intestines, simulated by the nylon fabric. Students poured the stomach contents in and watched the "urine" come out. Last, you guessed it, "feces" made their way out of the large intestine.
The students were engaged from start to finish as they brought the digestive system to life. That's why we call it, #TheBarnesvilleWay!
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
