By Growing Writer, Makenna Luther (Student, 7th grade)
It was a dark and stormy night. Misty, and with the slight taste of mint in the air. Carl the Carrot was roaming the streets inconspicuously on his way to get Chinese food at 11:57 P.M. at night.
“Nǐ hǎo,” grumbled the old scraggly celery working behind the counter of Qǐng zǒu kāi, Carl the Carrot’s favorite restaurant. Carl ordered the usual, ants climbing on tree and sat down in the tiny booth by the corner of the restaurant.
He ate in silence, only the chirp of crickets and the hum of kitchen appliances filling in the void. Only him, a brussel sprout, and the celery working behind the counter were there. Carl the Carrot ate for 5 minutes and 49.3 seconds before being disrupted. There were legends and myths of giant hands that grab innocent fruits and vegetables; perceived as children's stories. Carl didn't believe them until it was too late. First grabbed, then washed, chopped, boiled, and chewed.
“Oh how delicious!” exclaimed Harry the human. “We should have cooked carrots every night!”
Be warned, young sprouts, never eat alone at night in an unostentatious Chinese restaurant. You may meet your doom.
