Lower School Students Celebrate Black History Month with Art and Creativity
Kay'La Portee
This February, The Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences Lower School students participated in a special Teatime event to honor Black History Month. This month’s Teatime focused on the achievements and artistry of black creators, providing students with a meaningful opportunity to explore the rich contributions Black artists have made to the art world.
Each Lower School teacher selected a Black artist to spotlight, and students were divided into seven groups to learn about these remarkable figures and create their own art inspired by their art. From abstract art to repurposing materials to quilting and portraiture, the students worked together to showcase their creativity, drawing and inspiration from the diverse styles and techniques they had studied.
The students' hard work and imagination was showcased in a stunning gallery display, where their pieces were exhibited for the entire school community to view and appreciate. The gallery not only celebrated students’ artistic achievements but also honored the powerful impact of Black artists throughout history.
This Teatime event was a wonderful chance for students to reflect on the contributions of Black creators, deepen their understanding of art history, and express themselves in a collaborative and meaningful way. The Lowers School’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating Black History Month through art was a memorable and enriching experience for all involved.
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
