Outdoor & Environmental Education
Our beautiful 30-acre campus in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve is our extended classroom, enabling us to integrate NATURE into our everyday LEARNING.
Barnesville is proud to be the only accredited independent school in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. In our unique location and beautiful setting, we seek to bring our students into direct connection with nature and the agricultural community. In addition to our science curriculum, students average 60 minutes/day outside learning and playing.
In 2011, Barnesville School was certified as a Maryland Green School under the auspices of the Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education (MAEOE).In 2021, Barnesville School earned its recertification as a Maryland Green School. As part of this certification, Barnesville demonstrated achievement in three areas—curriculum and instruction, community partnerships, and best management practices.

Black Hill Partnership
Barnesville has a school-wide partnership with Black Hill Regional Park to enhance outdoor and environmental education across our curriculum. Every month, Park naturalists visit our campus to share their expertise with students in conjunction with class field trips to Black Hill.

Trout in Classroom
Students raise trout from eggs to fingerlings, manage tank water quality, engage in stream habitat study, and learn about ecosystem connectivity as part of Trout in the Classroom, an experiential environmental science program.

Greenhouse
Many science experiments and gardening projects get their start in greenhouse and nearby planting stations, which were built and installed by Barnesville alumni earning Eagle Scout honors.

Echo Hill
Barnesville seventh graders spend three days and two nights at Echo Hill Outdoor School on the Chesapeake Bay for an environmental science field study program and team building activities.

Bluebird Nesting Box
Trained by naturalists from Black Hill Regional Park, students and faculty monitor Bluebird nesting boxes strategically placed around campus, guarding against invasive species so Bluebirds can thrive here.

Outdoor Classroom
Barnesville’s beautiful 30-acre campus is our extended classroom, enabling us to integrate nature into our everyday learning. Outdoor learning spaces include an outdoor classroom, a greenhouse, gardens, and natural activity areas like Explorer Woods.
