Kay'La Portee
In his fifth year at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences, Mr. Hayes continues to inspire students with his passion for music, his wealth of experience, and his undeniable talent. As Barnesville’s music educator, Mr. Hayes brings a deep understanding of music theory and a hands-on approach to learning that resonates with students on all levels.

Before joining Barnesville in 2020, Mr. Hayes had already built an impressive 10-year teaching career. His love for music runs deep, originating from his upbringing in a household filled with musical influence. Both of his parents were musicians, and he was “immersed in the world of music throughout his K-12 education”, says Hayes.

A graduate of Howard University, Mr. Hayes earned both a Bachelor's degree in 2000 and a Master’s degree in 2002. From there, his career soared to incredible heights. Mr. Hayes performed around the world with various artists, including Grammy Award Winners, as a bassist and Music Director! His role as an arranger, orchestrator, and musical transcriptionist is equally impressive, including his collaborations with five-time Grammy Award-winning artist Yolanda Adams and the world-renowned Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra.

Most recently, Mr. Hayes had the opportunity to perform at the Presidential Inauguration, adding another notable chapter to his diverse career in music. Beyond his career in performance, Mr. Hayes has also worked on numerous musicals in the Washington, DC area, further strengthening his position as a multi-faceted musician. His experience with such high-level skill allows him to provide students with great insights into the world of professional music.

One of Mr. Hayes’ favorite activities at Barnesville is hosting
Talent Tuesday during morning meeting, where students are invited to perform. This fun tradition gives students a chance to showcase their talents, build confidence, and connect with their peers through the power of music.

For Mr. Hayes says, the most rewarding aspect of teaching at Barnesville is witnessing the moment when students discover the joy and appreciation of music for themselves. Whether they’re learning to play an instrument or collaborating with their peers in a group performance, seeing students connect with music on a personal level is the ultimate fulfillment.

As for a fun fact, when Mr. Hayes was a child, he had the honor of dancing with James Brown! This memory adds to his persona and showcases his lifelong connection to music. With his remarkable background, impressive performance credentials, and enthusiasm, Mr. Hamilton Hayes is a true asset to the Barnesville community, and what a privilege to students, staff and faculty to work amongst an incredibly talented musician.
