Teacher Highlight: Ms. Gretchen Gobin | Librarian at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences

Kay'La Portee
Today, we celebrate Ms. Gretchen Gobin, our amazing librarian at The Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences, in honor of National Librarian Day. Gretchen, formally known as Ms. G, has been a cherished member of our community for two years, and in that time, she has brought a unique blend of creativity, passion, and dedication to her role as our librarian.

Before becoming a librarian, Ms. G had a remarkable 25-year career as an art educator. She taught elementary school general art for four years, followed by 15 years of teaching ceramics to middle and high school students. She also shared her expertise at the University of Maryland, BlackRock Center for the Arts, and various community centers, offering ceramics classes and summer camp art programs. Her background in the arts brings a creative and engaging touch to everything she does.

When asked about the most rewarding part of her job, Ms. G shared, “I get to see the kids every day! I'm here because I want to see my kids every day.” It’s clear that her love for her students and passion for teaching shines through in her work with our school community.

One of Ms. G’s most beloved activities is reading to students and sparking their passion for books. She influences their reading interests and encourages them to explore new stories and genres. Through her creative projects and engaging activities centered around books, Ms. G makes reading fun and accessible for all students, inspiring them to develop a lifelong love for literature.

In addition to her roles as librarian, Ms. G is also involved in a variety of extracurricular activities at Barnesville, including soccer, basketball, and tennis, showing her commitment to being an active part of our students’ lives both inside and outside the classroom.

Ms. G, a proud first-generation American, moved from Washington D.C. to Barnesville specifically for our school. She was drawn to the close-knit, rural setting of the school and the small class sizes that allow for more personalized connections with students. She even has two children of her own at Barnesville–a sixth grader and a fourth grader, which only strengthens her connection to the school community.

When she’s not in the library, Ms. G has a creative side hustle–making and selling pottery. She takes custom orders and has a true passion for ceramics. Her eclectic past includes working as a bicycle messenger in D.C. for seven years during her twenties, adding another layer of adventure to her multifaceted life.

On this National Librarian Day, we want to express our gratitude to Ms. G for all the work she does to make our library a welcoming, inspiring and safe place for students to learn and grow. Her dedication, creativity, and love for teaching makes Barnesville a richer place for everyone. We appreciate everything she does!

Thank you, Ms. G, for being such an integral part of our school community!
