Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences: A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Kay'La Portee
The Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences has established a culture rooted in academic excellence, environmental sustainability, and a deep commitment to community service. Over the years, students and faculty have shown their dedication to making a meaningful impact through various acts of service, ranging from food, pajamas, and coat drives to raising funds for relief efforts.

Acts of Service That Inspire Change

Barnesville students donated food supplies to the food pantry of the Western Upper Montgomery County Help (WUCO), a local non-profit, as well as a nearby food bank. Students brought in an impressive amount of non-perishable goods and essential items. From collecting to dropping off the donations, students were able to see firsthand the impact their contributions made.

Previously in honor of Veterans Day, students raised funds for the Fisher House Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing temporary housing for military veterans and their families during medical treatment. Through their fundraising efforts, students collected over $900, which translated to more than 280 nights of accommodations for veterans in need.

Barnesville has also extended its reach beyond local boundaries through initiatives like the Pajama drive, which provides pajamas and books to those in need. We donated 189 pajamas! This global perspective on service helps students to understand the importance of giving. Barnesville also has an upcoming coat drive prepared to collect coats, ensuring that children have protection during the cold winter. As temperatures drop, the need for warm clothing rises.

Building a Culture of Giving

At the heart of these efforts and acts of service, is the mission to nurture compassionate, thoughtful leaders. Barnesville’s service projects are designed not only to meet immediate needs but to also instill lifelong values within our students. Teaching them about empathy and the importance of being active participants in the community. By participating in these projects, students learn that their actions can make a profound difference in the lives of others.

Making a Local and National Impact

The dual focus on local food drives and supporting national organizations like Fisher House highlights Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences’ holistic approach to service. Locally, our efforts ensure that families have access to essential resources, while nationally, our contributions help provide comfort and care to those who need it. Thinking globally while acting locally, through one act of service at a time. As Barnesville students look to the future, they carry with them not only the lessons learned in the classroom but also the invaluable experience of making a real difference in the world. Leaving a legacy of service, compassion and leadership wherever they go.
