Teacher Highlight: Ms. Celia Bechtel | School Counselor at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences
Kay'La Portee
We are thrilled to highlight Celia Bechtel, a dedicated educator and counselor who has made a lasting impact at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences. Celia joined our community at the end of October 2024 and brings a wealth of experience with her. Over the years, Celia has taught a variety of subjects including math for multiple grade levels and has served as a school counselor for 15 years. With a degree in sociology and a master's in counseling, Celia’s diverse background enriches the school environment in countless ways.
When asked what she finds most rewarding about teaching at Barnesville, Celia shared that she truly loves the positive atmosphere and the “sense of camaraderie that exists among the students.” “It’s a community here,” she says. “Everyone is a part of something special, and there's a real spirit of togetherness.” This strong sense of community is what keeps Celia motivated every day, and she deeply values the way everyone at Barnesville supports one another.
In her role as a counselor, Celia is known for her gentle approach when advising students. She offers a safe, nonjudgmental space where students feel comfortable speaking freely and feel heard. Her office has become a safe space on campus where students can go to talk, find guidance, and receive support. This environment, built on trust and understanding, helps students navigate challenges and grow into confident, resilient individuals.
Beyond her work in counseling, Celia has a passion and a gift for music! She has been a choir teacher for 25 years and may help with the theater program at Barnesville in the future. Her love of music extends beyond the classroom, as she regularly sings in choirs and has performed many genres of music and musical theatre.
When asked why she chose Barnesville, Celia highlighted the school’s deep care for each student. She appreciates the challenges Barnesville offers and the way the school ensures that every child becomes an integral part of the family. “There’s a tremendous amount of care for each student,” Celia says, “and that’s what makes Barnesville such a great place.”
In addition to all the wonderful work Celia does at Barnesville, we are especially grateful for her role as a counselor. In honor of National Counseling Week, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible impact she has on our students and community. Celia’s expertise, kindness, and dedication help create a safe and nurturing environment for all our students to thrive.
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
