Teacher Highlight: Ms. Cheryl Crain | Second Grade Educator at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences
Kay'La Portee
We are excited to shine a spotlight on Cheryl Crain, a dedicated educator who has been making an impact at Barnesville for the past four years. With a rich background in occupational therapy, neonatal care, early childhood education, and even college chemistry, Ms. Crain brings a diverse and unique skill set to the classroom.
With a degree in occupational therapy, working in a neonatal unit to early childhood education, this well-rounded experience has helped shape a teaching style that focuses on both fun and learning. As a teacher at Barnesville, the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing students grow, have fun, and develop new skills. “The little things, like when students come up to me and show me something they learned, mean the most,” says Ms. Crain. Cheryl does an outstanding job at connecting the curriculum with hands-on learning. For example, second grade students finished reading the book, Tells Tale, by Jack Plank, written about Jack, a retired pirate spending his days recounting tales from his pirate life. Inspired by the book, students let their creativity sail as they painted, cut, and built their very own pirate-theme masterpieces and decorated the pirate ship on the playground. What a wonderful way to combine storytelling!
In addition to teaching, Ms. Crain has been involved in a number of extracurricular programs at Barnesville. From Chess Club, Finger Weaving Club, and supporting students in Cross Country. It’s clear that Ms. Crain has a passion for nuturing students’ interests and encouraging them to explore new challenges! When asked why Barnesville, Ms. Crain highlighted the small class sizes, excellent teachers, and the freedom to implement creative, individualized lessons. “Teachers here get to do what they think is best for the students, not follow a scripted curriculum,” Crain shares. The beautiful outdoor property also provides students with a unique environment to learn and grow.
Outside the classroom, Ms. Crain is a true adventurer! She completed two 100-mile races and 80 marathons! Yes, 80! Demonstrating incredible determination and passion. She has greyhounds that mean the world to her as well!
We are so lucky to have Ms. Crain as part of the Barnesville community, inspiring and impacting our students every day!
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
